In the period of 1887-1891 in Devichye Polye (Maiden`s Field) a complex of clinics attached to Medical Faculty of Moscow University was inaugurated and among them – the maxilla-facial surgery and dental clinic.
The onset of Dentistry (stomatology) as a subject taught in the Medical Faculty of the Moscow University is considered to be in 1885 year and is related to Dean of Medical faculty, N.V. Sklifosovsky, who pointed out the importance of this subject. In 1885 the Chair of Stomatology and dental Surgery was established. In November 1985, the Chair of Stomatology celebrated its 100 anniversary. This renowned day was celebrated by organizing a Jubilee Scientific Conference where stomatologists and other medical specialists from all over Russia and abroad were invited.
The Stomatological faculty started its functioning in 2000. There are more than 800 students studying now at this faculty.
Aims and Objectives of the Core-curriculum
- Year One – comprises mainly premedical instruction. Students receive a broadly based grounding in the physical, chemical and biological sciences, general dental materials, as well as the basic medical sciences (Human Anatomy, Histology & Embryology, Physiology);
- Year Two – Basic medical-biological sciences (Biochemistry, Microbiology, Patology, general and oral), continue with the introduction to the special preclinical subjects. The course of humanitarian subjects makes the basis of understanding the role of medicine in society, human behaviour. The introduction course of dental diseases starts (Propedeutical Dentistry), where students start working with dental equipment. It is an important integrated course of the basic biomedical sciences, the pathological, microbiological, immunological aspects of disease and the mechanisms of actions of drugs are taught along with the special theoretical and practical courses for stomatololgists;
- Year Three provides instructions in general subjects: Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Hygiene; and special subjects: Conservative and Surgical dentistry, Epidemiology and Prevention of Stomatological Diseases and others; clinical work in teaching hospitals, when the students learn the skills of history taking, physical examination, and treating dental patients;
- Year Four – also offers an integrated course; general clinical sciences in hospitals and Clinical Campus, as well as blocks of Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, and Surgery, hospital - based tutorials teach students to relate their knowledge of the natural history of the disease to the clinical skills of history taking, physical examination, diagnosis; special stomatological subjects with practical sessions – Oral and Maxillo-facial Surgery, Children`s Oral Surgery, Prosthodontics and others;
- Year Five (Final)– students undertake major terms in general and special stomatological subjects - Conservative and Surgical Dentistry, Orthodontics. No winter examinations.

Duration of the course– five years, ten terms.
Autumn semester – 1st September – 10th January, 2 weeks for winter exams, 25th January – 7th February – winter vacations; spring semester – till 10th June, 3 weeks for summer exams, summer practical training, August – 1st September - summer vacations.
